    1. A male mezzo-soprano, or a male soprano (just like alex newell) is not a category it's just a term associated to those VERY light tenors who can reach and easily hit those mezzo-soprano or soprano's high notes. A countertenor is a light tenor who uses falsetto and head voice to reach some contralto's high note, but he doesn't go higher than a male mezzo or soprano. So Chris Colfer cant be a countertenor

  2. There is no term "male mezzo-soprano". And countertenor can't be describe as "light tenor". It is separate voice type. Chris voice is too light for actual tenor. He has countertenor voice type.

  3. Okay, no. There is no such thing as a "male mezzo-soprano". There are countertenors, and there are sopranist countertenors, which is basically a countertenor singing REALLY high. Now, in any instance, countertenors use head voice, NOT falsetto as so many people assume, to reach their high notes, instead of the weightier, but ultimately less agile middle voice as most operatic or pop tenors use (the "mixed belt", so to speak).
It should also be specified that a countertenor can have any of the "regular" male voice types, and though tenors are most common, there are plenty of good baritones and even a few basses who prefer and sing better as countertenors.
Chris is a countertenor, verging on a sopranist, and would be except for two facts: 1. though his tone is light, his voice still sits in a high tenor range naturally and 2. he has never reached above Bb5.

    1. As an example, the Australian countertenor Graham Pushee (now retired, alas) was a natural baritone. Best Julius Caesar (Handel) ever. My own mediocre voice is in the contralto range and I cannot get near a Bb5. I find it hard to see Chris Colfer as a countertenor, but more of a male soprano. Disclaimer: I am no expert.

  6. personally i think chris colfer is a castrato... [soprano or mezzo-soprano or contralto that is the male version of one the woman's vocal range]...so the one posted saying male m-soprano is totally right....

  7. He's not a castrato, as that term refers exclusively to males who were castrated before puberty in order to prevent the hormonal changes that would lower their voices. It was done for entertainment in the middle ages and into the renaissance, but I'm pretty certain it's not being done anywhere anymore. And it doesn't apply to Mr Colfer.

    1. Wrong.

The term castrato isn't used exclusively for those who cut their balls. There are modern castrati (like Radu Marian) who underwent natural (hormone deficiencies) or unnatural (medicines or surgeries) to prevent voice change. They shouldn't be confused and mixed up with countertenors as the anatomy of voice production is totally different. A countertenor is a singer whose tessitura lies in female range but with a unique "matured male timbre and tone", still male-voiced.

But I do agree that Chris Colfer is not a castrato. Although he has a very effeminate voice, his registers, breaks, and vocal production are still closer to that of a matured man.
